Bringing Periwinkle Home

C

When I read the stories that were posted on Save a Cat after I joined about a year ago, I did not think I would be sending one in so soon to tell my own adoption story. My house was full, I had three wonderful friends, Smokey (12), Bennie (14) and Buddy (8). I had no idea that soon we would lose my beloved friend and companion Bennie, who went to the Rainbow Bridge on March 20, 2011. We lost him only 6 short weeks after he had become ill and stopped eating. Despite trying chemotherapy, my furry friend grew tired, and needed to go home. I was devastated. He had moved with me from Ohio, to Louisiana, to where I live now near Dallas, TX. I have chronic illnesses, and whenever I was feeling badly, he would hop up onto my lap and just purr and purr and purr and try to help me feel better. What would I do without my purr therapy?

Save a Cat really helped me through the final weeks of his life, and his crossing over the Bridge. Earning Points became a form of therapy for me. Bennie even got the chance to be one of the Save a Cat Family Cats of the Week. He would often sit with me while I played. As the time for his leaving started drawing closer, I asked him to help me find another friend who needed a family. And he did. He sat with me while I searched through some of the local shelters on Save a Cat until we found Periwinkle.

Ordinarily, I would not have looked twice at Periwinkle because she was almost 7 (we adopted her 2 weeks before her 7th birthday) and I preferred to adopt cats age 3 and younger. But for some reason, with Bennie sitting on my lap, I knew she was the one. I initially clicked on her profile because of her sweet face and her name. You see, I had met my husband online 4 years ago, and he asked me what my favorite color was, and I said periwinkle and other shades of purple. So the first time we met in person he brought flowers periwinkle and other shades of purple. And I must confess, Bennie tried to eat them! My bridesmaids wore this shade for our wedding. So, despite her age, my husband and I went to meet her at the Dallas Humane Society in April of this year (2011).

I could just say the rest is history but I will share just a little more. Periwinkle has now taken her place as queen of the house. She loves to follow me around chirping. Yes, chirping. She has a little tiny meow that echoes when she trots that sounds like chirping. She waits patiently until I settle into my chair when I get home each day, and then pounces right up to sit with me. She is very social, and tries to get her brothers to open up more. She will go over to Buddy and head butt him until he gives her licks! She also has recently started sleeping next to me in bed at night. And when I am feeling badly, she will sit with me and purr and purr. I will miss my Bennie so, but am very greatful he was able to help me find my Periwinkle on Save a Cat.

Bringing Khan Home

Cute_cat_khan

Originally, I had no intention of adopting an animal. I'm a part-time student (most of my classes are online) whom lives in a one-bedroom apartment with my fiance. I found the application through a friend, and virtually fostered a cat named Tiger, and later on, another cat named Romeo.

Weeks went by, and there was a death in the family. I took a break from school, and began working part-time. With my fiance away at work, I found myself lost in depression. We eventually came to the conclusion after a death in the family, that we should have a companion animal around the house. I looked to Save-A-Cat for my options. I decided that it would be best to adopt one of my foster cats. When we went to the shelter, we fell in love with Romeo, a flame-point himalayan. We filled out the papers and later adopted him. However, when we brought him to the vet we found out that he was suffering from a severe heart murmur that the shelter wasn't aware of, miraculously, he had survived neutering and all the stress associated with being in a shelter. We were told by the doctor that he most likely would have a shortened-life span, and could either pass away any day or live probably up to the age of ten or so, but she didn't expect this already three-year old cat to be around much longer. She warned us he would become somewhat expensive to take care of later in life, and that if the shelter had known about it, he would have been killed. Obviously, he was a very lucky cat, and despite this all he still was a very large and energetic healthy-looking animal. We renamed him "Khan" (meaning Tiger.)

We ended up taking up an insurance policy on him, and we have bought him a lot more things than we planned on, but we love him very much and he is happy to be with us. Despite the relatively small area, he has a cat condo, a cat tree, and two large sliding-glass doors to entertain himself with. We also purchased a bird-feeder to place outside to keep him occupied. He cannot play with toys, or else he has episodes of oxygen deprivation to the brain from increased heart-rate due to the exercise, so we have found these to be great low-stress substitutes. As of right now, he's very happy and seems to be acting like a normal healthy animal. We hope he is with us for years to come.

Thank you Save-A-Cat! You truly helped save his life!

Bringing Ozzie & Simon Home

Ozzie_and_simon Ozzie_and_simon2

Hello, Early in the spring of this year my husband and I decided to adopt a cat. We've been animal lovers our entire lives. Two years ago our elderly cat passed away and though it took us a long time to come to terms with his loss, eventually we felt the time was right to open our home to another kitty. I looked through what must have been hundreds of animals, all in desperate need of a permanent and loving home, but after countless inquiries they were either too far away or had all been promised to other families. I persisted and would stay awake till sometimes 3 in the morning looking for a kitty that would hopefully become part of our family. My husband and I aren't able to have children, so our animals are our life. I decided to get involved in Save a Cat so as I might play a part in helping animals in need.

One night I came across Ozzie, a gray kitty who was Siamese but looked like no other Siamese I'd ever seen. I fell in love with him from the photo alone. I called to ask about him and the lady on the phone said he'd been promised to someone else. I told her, if these other people have any doubts whatsoever my husband and I have our hearts set on him. I felt so blessed when she returned my call and said we could pick him up. We've had him 4 months now, and he brings me such joy every day. He seems to be very content here, relaxed and easygoing, and he loves to sit in my lap and play endlessly with his toys.

Ozzie is so incredible I'd never thought of adopting a second cat. But...I continued to look around Save a Cat. I ran across a tiny, scrawny kitten named Simon. He has a serious medical condition called megaesophagus and must be fed special foods as well as a supplementary liquid diet. I didn't delude myself into thinking this would be an easy undertaking, it demands alot of time and patience on my part, but that is nothing compared to what this poor kitty must have had to endure. We adopted him shortly therafter. He's been doing marvelously. We stick to the schedule and Simon runs and plays just as a normal 1yr old cat would. He's loveable and affectionate and I'm so thankful we have the opportunity to care for him.

Bringing Home Siam

Siam

I entered my zipcode and siamese into the Save a Cat search. Both my husband and I have been interested in finding another chocolate point siamese cat since one we had died of massive heart failure. It's possible I would have lost him anyways later because his kidneys were enlarged and had some sort of growth on them. It has now been over 2 years.

When I saw a chocolate point Siamese/Burmese mix in the search list from Madison WI, showed the picture to my husband. He thought the cat looked cute and that we should pursue adoption. I filled out the application for the Dane County Friends of Ferals for Siam. Last Thursday on my Birthday, we drove the hour drive to go and pick him up.

We're still in the process of assimilating him into our household of 3 other cats. One cat has never had a problem with him. In fact I'm using him to get Siam to respond to me. Siam loves getting attention, especially if there is another cat getting it instead of him. A second cat is beginning to take to him, but isn't quite sure of him yet. Our third cat is having a harder time, but he also has a problem with all strangers.

Update: Sammy, or Siam, is now a full member of the household. I was amazed at how fast he learned our routines. He learned the brush routine faster than he learned his own name!

I think your FaceBook application is a great way of getting attention for the animals who need adopting.

Bringing Home Smoke-ums

Smoke-ums1 Smoke-ums2

I am responding to your Facebook post asking to hear from people who actually adopted a cat that they were virtually fostering. I am one of those people. The cats name is "Smoke-ums" but you had him listed as "Smokens." I fostered and then physically adopted Smoke-ums from the Animal Welfare League in Port Charlotte. I had a gray tom cat named Smokey and he was with me for 16 years. Smoke-ums looked just like him and I missed having a gray cat around. We visited him and there was an instant connection. My wife and I have rescued many cats in our time and have a soft spot in our hearts for them.

Bringing Home Shaniqua and Snickers

Shaniqua Snickers

I had been virtually fostering cats on Save A Cat for several months when I decided to do a search on rescue cats that were available in my area. I came across "Misty" and when I read her story, it brought tears to my eyes. She had been part of a dog fighting ring and had been used a bait for the dogs and was missing part of her tail. I assume they tied a rope to her tail when she was thrown in the ring. Anyway, someone up there must've been looking out for her because the dog ring was broken up and she was taken to the local animal control. Then she then was adopted out by St. Francis Animal Rescue. When I read her heart wrenching story, my heart just went out to her. She had a really rough start in her young life and all I wanted to do was go and get her and give her a loving forever home. I felt she deserved that after pain and suffering she had been through. I wanted to give her a "forever home" where she would know nothing but love and attention. She would truly be a pampered princess in our home.

My son and I had been looking on the Save A Cat website trying to locate where she was being kept. While we were on the site, he pointed out Carmalita. He thought she had a lot of spunk and voted to adopt her instead. I told him that I was going to get Misty as she belonged with us. When I got to Pet Smart, I went into the adoption room. They opened Misty's cage and I was petting and talking to her. All of a sudden, a little orange paw shot out of the cage below and tapped me on the arm several times. When I looked down, I saw that it was Carmalita; the kitten that my son had wanted. Now I was in a difficult spot. I had only come to adopt one cat, so which one???? As I looked at Carmalita, it became clear that she belonged with us too. I couldn't leave her behind.

As the story ends, I brought both cats home with me to their forever home. Misty is now named Snickers and Carmalita is now named Shaniqua or "Sheekie" as the kids call her. Snickers is a very loving, affectionate cat in spite of her previous life. Sheekie is a bundle of energy and is on the go non stop in her waking hours. Both cats have very unique personalities and have become an important part of our pet family. We can't imagine life without these "girls" in it.

Thank you Save A Cat for everything that you are doing and for helping to find forever homes for many deserving cats and dogs.

Bringing Home Domino

Domino

Well, my husband and I went to the pet store for cat doors and went to go look at the kitties up for adoption. We saw Domino and fell in love with him! We decided we were going to adopt him. We looked up Domino on Save a Cat and my husband virtually fostered him. Here, I had sent Domino to him as a suggestion a few weeks ago, so I earned points for him virtually adopting him. What a coincidence! I think it was meant to be! We visited Domino every day at the pet store until the day we brought him home.

I virtually fostered Domino's roommate, Simmy. We wanted to adopt Simmy too, but we already have 2 cats. I'm happy to know that Simmy has since been adopted too. Domino loves sitting on the deck watching the birds and squirrels. He's very lovable and jumps up on your lap, loves to be petted. He's a 2 year old Norwegian Forest cat mix. Our other cats are a Maine Coon and a Himalayan/Siamese mix. We love long haired kitties! Domino is a wonderful addition to our family!
